1 Overview

Steel ruler water level gauge is the most accurate method for measuring water level, usually used to measure the water level in wells, boreholes, and water level pipes. It is particularly suitable for observing the groundwater level in hydropower projects or manually inspecting the seepage line of earth and rock dams. This instrument can be used during construction or as a long-term safety monitoring tool for engineering projects, in compliance with the technical specifications for safety monitoring of earth and rock dams.

3 Structural principles

The measurement and reading of water level changes consist of two main parts:

1、 The buried part of the underground material consists of a water level pipe and a bottom cover (purchased separately);

2、 The ground receiving instrument is a steel ruler water level gauge, which consists of a measuring head, steel ruler cable, receiving system, and winding reel.

3.1 Probe part: Made of stainless steel, equipped with water resistance contact points inside. When the contact points touch the water surface, the receiving system will be connected. When the contact points leave the water surface, the receiving system will automatically shut down.

3.2 Steel ruler cable section: The steel ruler and wire are made of plastic technology, which not only prevents the steel ruler from rusting, but also simplifies the operation process, making measurement and preparation more convenient.

3.3 Receiving System Part: Composed of an audio system and a peak indicator, the audio system emits a continuous buzzing sound from a buzzer, and the peak indicator is indicated by a voltmeter pointer. Both can be selected by toggling a switch, and regardless of the receiving system used, the reading accuracy is consistent.

3.4 Winding reel section: consisting of a winding disk and a bracket, the receiving system and battery are all placed inside the core cavity of the winding reel, and a steel ruler cable is wound outside the cavity.

3.5 Water level pipe (purchased separately): Made of PVC engineering plastic, produced by our factory, including the main pipe and connecting pipe. The main pipe has an inner diameter of Φ 45mm and an outer diameter of Φ 53mm, and the connecting pipe has an inner diameter of Φ 53mm and an outer diameter of Φ 63mm. The connecting pipe is sleeved at the joint of the two main pipes to play a connecting and fixing role. It mainly has four rows of Φ 7mm holes drilled on it to allow water to enter the pipe smoothly. When buried, geotextile should be wrapped around the main pipe and fixed properly to provide filtering function.

3.6 Bottom cover (purchased separately): Made by injection molding and produced by our factory, it is installed at the bottom and top of the water level pipe, which can effectively prevent sediment from entering or foreign objects from falling into the pipe, thus avoiding affecting the measurement.

4 Usage Methods

When measuring, loosen the locking screw behind the winding reel, allow the winding reel to rotate freely, press the power button (the power indicator light is on), place the measuring head into the water level tube, hold the steel ruler cable in hand, and slowly move the measuring head downwards. When the contact of the measuring head touches the water surface, the sound system's speaker will emit a continuous buzzing sound. At this time, read out the depth dimension of the steel ruler cable at the pipe mouth, which is the distance between the groundwater level and the pipe mouth.

If the buzzing sound cannot be heard when measuring in a noisy environment, peak indication can be used instead. Simply turn the selection switch on the instrument panel to the voltage mode, and the measurement method is the same as above. At this time, the measurement accuracy is the same as that measured by the sound system.

Users must pay attention to two points when measuring readings:

a) When the contact point of the measuring head comes into contact with the water surface, the speaker will make a sound, or the voltmeter will immediately indicate. At this time, the steel ruler cable should be slowly retracted to carefully find the exact position of the sound or indication moment, and then read the depth dimension of the point from the hole.

b) The accuracy of readings depends on timely determination of the starting position of peak sounds or indications, and the measurement accuracy is related to the operator's proficiency, so repeated practice and operation are necessary.

5 Maintenance

5.1 Due to limited battery capacity, the power switch should be turned off immediately after each measurement is completed. Do not forget! When replacing the battery, remove the front panel battery cover to replace the new battery.

5.2 After measurement, the measuring head and steel ruler cable must be wiped clean, and the steel ruler cable must be neatly wound around the winding reel before being placed in the cabinet.

5.3 The probe must be sealed during operation and must not be disassembled to avoid damage.

When a malfunction is found in the measuring head, please send it to our factory for maintenance in a timely manner.

5.5 Steel ruler cables should not be bent, especially near the end of the measuring head, to avoid damage and breakage. The measuring head should be handled gently and avoid severe vibration.

6 Receipt and Storage

6.1 When users open and inspect instruments, they should first check whether the quantity of instruments matches the packing list. If there are any discrepancies, please contact our factory.

6.2 The instrument should be stored in a dry and ventilated room with a temperature of -10 ℃ to+40 ℃ and a humidity not exceeding 80%, free from corrosive gases.

6.3 Within one year from the date of shipment, if the user discovers that the product quality is lower than the technical specifications while complying with the transportation, storage, and use rules, our factory is responsible for repairing or replacing it (if it is disassembled without authorization, our factory will not guarantee repair).
